Superyacht Galley Waste Management

Effective waste management is one of the most operationally critical aspects of superyacht galley design. A vessel hosting twelve charter guests for two weeks generates a substantial volume of food waste, packaging and glass, all of which must be stored, managed and disposed of in compliance with MARPOL regulations applicable to the yacht's cruising area.

MARPOL Compliance and Environmental Responsibility

MARPOL Annex V prohibits the discharge of most waste categories into the sea. Superyachts must maintain a garbage record book documenting all waste disposals. An efficient onboard waste processing and storage system reduces the frequency and volume of waste that must be discharged at port reception facilities, demonstrating the environmental commitment increasingly expected of the superyacht industry.

Waste Management Equipment Categories

• Food waste processors (macerators): Grind food waste to a fine slurry that can be discharged within MARPOL-permitted zones or stored for port disposal.
• Waste compactors: Electric waste compactors reduce the volume of dry waste — cardboard, plastic packaging, cans — by up to 80%.
• Sorting and segregation stations: Colour-coded, labelled waste sorting stations facilitate crew compliance with recycling and waste segregation protocols.
• Bin housing furniture: Custom stainless bin housings keep waste containers hygienic, out of sight and correctly positioned relative to the waste generation point.
• Glass crushers: Bottle crushers reduce the volume of glass waste and eliminate the hazard of loose bottles during passage.
• Odour management: Sealed waste bins with deodorising filter lids and refrigerated waste storage prevent odour migration into the galley and accommodation.
