Laundry Room Layout and Workflow Planning

The layout of the laundry room determines the efficiency of the crew's daily workflow. A well-planned laundry has a logical sequence: soiled linen in → sorting → washing → drying → pressing and folding → storage → distribution. Each step should flow naturally from the previous, without unnecessary crossing of clean and soiled linen — which is both a time inefficiency and a hygiene risk.

We produce a laundry room layout drawing with equipment positioned for optimal workflow, with adequate clearances for equipment access, door swing and loading/unloading. Where the room dimensions are fixed, we develop the best achievable layout within the constraints, always prioritising the operational workflow over aesthetic considerations.

For new build projects, we advise on the ideal dimensions and configuration of the laundry room before the deck plan is finalised, ensuring that the space allocation is matched to the equipment requirement rather than defined by what remains after other spaces are allocated.

Ventilation and Drainage Coordination

Laundry room ventilation is a critical design element that is frequently inadequate on vessels where the laundry was specified without specialist input. Washer-dryers and tumble dryers produce significant quantities of warm, moisture-laden air. Without adequate extraction, this moisture accumulates in the laundry room, migrates into adjacent spaces and condenses within the vessel structure — leading to mould, corrosion and degradation of the vessel fabric.

Installation and Commissioning

Charter vessels require genuine commercial-grade laundry equipment with rapid cycle times, high throughput and the durability to operate daily throughout a charter season.

For charter vessels, we typically specify multiple washers and dryers to provide redundancy — so that equipment failure does not immediately compromise the laundry operation — and ensure that combined wash capacity is sufficient to turn all guest and crew linen within the available daily crew window.

How much laundry capacity does a superyacht need?+
Capacity requirements depend on the vessel's guest and crew numbers, the linen inventory and the frequency of linen changes. As a starting point, a vessel with 10 guests and 12 crew, operating in charter with daily linen changes, may generate 40 to 60kg of laundry per day. This requires a laundry throughput of at least 60kg per day — achievable with two commercial washers and two dryers running two full cycles each. For private vessels with less frequent linen changes, the requirement may be half this. We calculate required capacity precisely from the vessel's brief before specifying equipment.
Can domestic washing machines be used aboard a superyacht?+
Domestic machines are not suitable for commercial superyacht laundry operation. They are designed for a limited number of cycles per day, are not built for the throughput of a working charter vessel and are not rated for marine installation. They may function adequately on private vessels with low laundry throughput, but they will fail prematurely under charter operation and may not be approved by the vessel's flag state or classification society. Commercial or professional-grade machines with marine ratings are always the correct specification for a working superyacht.
What is the difference between a condenser dryer and a vented dryer for a superyacht?+
A vented dryer exhausts moisture-laden air through a duct to the outside of the vessel. A condenser dryer extracts moisture from the drying air internally and collects it as water, requiring no external vent duct. For superyacht installation, condenser and heat pump dryers are generally preferred because they do not require ductwork penetrations through the vessel structure and do not affect the ventilation balance of the laundry room. However, they require adequate ambient ventilation to manage the heat they discharge into the room. The correct choice depends on the specific installation constraints of each vessel.
Do we need a water softener for the laundry?+
It depends on the water hardness in the regions where the vessel typically operates. Hard water causes scale buildup in washing machines, reduces detergent efficiency and degrades linen over time. Mediterranean water is typically hard; Atlantic and Caribbean water is often softer. For vessels operating primarily in hard water regions, a water softener protects the equipment and improves wash quality. For garment care and uniform pressing, a professional vertical steamer is efficient and effective. Yes.
