From this brief, we define the required wash and dry capacity — in kilograms per cycle and cycles per day — and the ancillary equipment needed to support the complete laundry workflow: pressing, folding, storage and distribution.
Equipment Specification and Selection
Marine laundry equipment spans a range of quality tiers and technical specifications. We specify equipment appropriate to the operational requirement and the vessel's standard — from mid-range professional laundry equipment suitable for owner-operated vessels to full commercial laundry suites specified for high-frequency charter operation.

Laundry Room Layout and Workflow Planning
The layout of the laundry room determines the efficiency of the crew's daily workflow. A well-planned laundry has a logical sequence: soiled linen in → sorting → washing → drying → pressing and folding → storage → distribution. Each step should flow naturally from the previous, without unnecessary crossing of clean and soiled linen — which is both a time inefficiency and a hygiene risk.
We produce a laundry room layout drawing with equipment positioned for optimal workflow, with adequate clearances for equipment access, door swing and loading/unloading. Where the room dimensions are fixed, we develop the best achievable layout within the constraints, always prioritising the operational workflow over aesthetic considerations.
For new build projects, we advise on the ideal dimensions and configuration of the laundry room before the deck plan is finalised, ensuring that the space allocation is matched to the equipment requirement rather than defined by what remains after other spaces are allocated.
Ventilation and Drainage Coordination
Laundry room ventilation is a critical design element that is frequently inadequate on vessels where the laundry was specified without specialist input. Washer-dryers and tumble dryers produce significant quantities of warm, moisture-laden air. Without adequate extraction, this moisture accumulates in the laundry room, migrates into adjacent spaces and condenses within the vessel structure — leading to mould, corrosion and degradation of the vessel fabric.
We specify the ventilation requirement for the laundry based on the equipment heat and moisture load, and coordinate with the naval architect or yard MEP engineer to ensure adequate extraction is provided. For vessels with space-constrained laundry rooms, we identify the minimum viable ventilation solution that prevents moisture buildup without requiring penetrations or ductwork that the structure cannot accommodate.
Drainage planning ensures that all washer waste water is correctly directed to the grey water system, with adequate pipe sizes and fall to drain at the maximum washer flow rate. We coordinate drainage layouts with the yard plumber to avoid the gravity issues that cause drainage backup — a common problem in laundry rooms that are below the waterline.
Installation and Commissioning
All laundry equipment supplied by The Superyacht Galley can be installed and commissioned as part of our service. Installation includes securing all equipment to the vessel structure with marine-rated fixings and vibration isolation mounts, making all electrical, water supply and drainage connections and conducting functional testing of all equipment.
Commissioning includes running each machine through a full cycle with appropriate test loads, verifying electrical draw against specification, checking all drainage connections under load and testing any water treatment equipment. We do not commission a laundry room until we have confirmed that every item performs correctly and that the ventilation system adequately manages the thermal and humidity load under simultaneous equipment operation.
Crew Training and After-Sales Support
Laundry equipment is typically operated by the least experienced crew members — junior stewardesses who may not have previous professional laundry experience. Correct training on equipment operation, cleaning procedures and preventive maintenance is essential both for equipment longevity and for the quality of laundry output.
