What is a Provision Store?

A provision store is a dedicated storage area aboard a superyacht for dry goods, canned goods, beverages, wine and non-perishable provisions. It is distinct from chilled and frozen storage, typically located as close to the galley as the vessel design permits.

Design Considerations

• Ventilation — provision stores require ventilation to prevent condensation and maintain stable ambient temperature. Unventilated stores become warm and humid, reducing shelf life.
• Shelving — should be adjustable, easily cleaned and fitted with retaining bars to prevent items moving in a seaway.
• Access — directly accessible from the galley, with a delivery hatch or route from the deck for provisioning without carrying goods through guest areas.
• Pest control — all provision stores must be sealed against vermin. This is a health and safety requirement and a flag state compliance issue.

For explorer yachts undertaking extended passages, provision store capacity is a critical design parameter — calculate against the longest planned period between resupply stops.
