What is a Diversity Factor?
The diversity factor is a number between 0 and 1 applied to the total connected load of a space to estimate the actual demand load at peak operation. It accounts for the reality that not all equipment operates at full rated load simultaneously.
Application in Superyacht Galley Planning
For a superyacht galley, a diversity factor of 0.65 to 0.75 is typically applied when sizing the distribution system. A galley with a connected load of 60kW would be designed with a distribution system capable of supplying approximately 40–45kW.
Applying too high a diversity factor risks undersizing the distribution system; too low a factor adds unnecessary cost and weight. A specialist marine electrical designer should confirm the appropriate factor for your vessel.
