How to Plan a Superyacht Galley Refit

The Case for Early Planning

A superyacht galley refit planned six months in advance costs less, takes less time and delivers a better result than one planned six weeks in advance. Savings come from competitive procurement pricing, optimal lead times and efficient yard scheduling.

Phase 1 — Survey (6+ Months Before)

A galley survey documents every piece of equipment with make, model, age, condition and performance rating. The output identifies: equipment to retain, equipment approaching end-of-life, equipment that must be replaced, and layout inefficiencies that can be corrected.

Phase 2 — Specification (4–5 Months Before)

Develop a full replacement specification. For each item being replaced, identify the performance requirement, space constraints, power supply available and lead time. Cross-reference against yard period dates for items with long lead times.

Phase 3 — Procurement (3–4 Months Before)

European commercial kitchen equipment typically carries 4–8 week lead times; custom fabrication 6–10 weeks. For a January yard period, orders should be placed no later than October. Confirm delivery addresses and pre-delivery storage where equipment arrives before the yard period commences.

Phase 4 — Yard Period

Confirm all equipment received undamaged on day one. Logical installation sequence: remove old equipment → structural modifications → MEP rough-in → stainless fabrication → equipment installation → finishing. Book manufacturer commissioning engineers well in advance — windows fill quickly during peak refit season (October–February Mediterranean).

Phase 5 — Commissioning

Allow a minimum of two days for commissioning before the vessel departs. This includes: manufacturer commissioning of all major appliances, chef familiarisation training, warranty registration and handover of manuals and commissioning certificates.
