Planning a Superyacht Galley Refit in 2026

The superyacht refit market has changed materially in recent years, and the galley equipment procurement landscape has changed with it. Lead times that were predictable and manageable in the pre-2020 era became volatile and extended through the supply chain disruptions of 2021-2023. The market has since normalised, but the experience has changed how proactive captains and management companies approach galley refit planning — and how we advise our clients.

This article addresses the key considerations for planning a galley refit in 2026: lead times to plan for, equipment categories most likely to face supply constraints, regulatory changes that may affect the specification, and the planning steps that should be taken well in advance of a planned refit period.

Lead Times in 2026: What to Plan For

As of mid-2026, lead times for major galley equipment categories have largely normalised from the extended timelines of 2021-2023. Current planning lead times by category:

  • Rational combi ovens — 8 to 14 weeks for standard configurations. Rational's production is running at capacity and lead times are firm — do not assume that ordering late in a project programme can be compensated by expediting
  • Winterhalter dishwashers and glasswashers — 4 to 8 weeks. Generally well-stocked through European distribution
  • Miele Marine laundry — 6 to 10 weeks. Allocation is managed through the distribution network; popular configurations can be on back-order
  • Dometic refrigeration — 4 to 8 weeks for standard configurations; up to 14 weeks for made-to-order or non-standard items
  • Induction cooking suites — 8 to 16 weeks for custom-configured suites; standard commercial modules are available with shorter lead times
  • Extract ventilation canopies — 8 to 14 weeks if custom-fabricated to the galley's dimensions

The practical implication: a galley refit planned for a spring 2026 installation window should have all major equipment ordered no later than December 2025 for the most constrained items. This requires the specification to be finalised and approved before Christmas — a timeline that is achievable with early engagement but challenging for projects that start the planning process in January.

Regulation Changes Affecting 2026 Galley Specifications

Several regulatory developments are relevant to 2026 galley specifications:

SOLAS gas cooking restrictions — flag state interpretations of SOLAS requirements for LPG cooking aboard commercial vessels continue to tighten. Several major flag states have moved towards requiring fire suppression systems for all galley cooking equipment, not just gas installations. Equipment specified from 2026 uses lower-GWP refrigerants. Service engineers and spare parts networks are adapting to handle the new refrigerant types; for vessels in regions with less developed refrigeration service infrastructure, it is worth confirming that local service engineers are qualified to work with the new refrigerant types.

Priority Equipment for 2026 Refit Investment

For vessels planning a refit in 2026, we identify three equipment categories where investment delivers the highest operational return:

Combi ovens — if the existing combi oven is more than eight years old or is showing performance inconsistencies, replacement with a current-generation Rational iCombi Pro provides the most significant single improvement to galley cooking capability. The gap between current combi oven technology and equipment manufactured before 2018 is substantial.

When should we start planning a galley refit for a winter 2026/27 installation?+
For a winter 2026/27 installation — typically November to February — specification planning should begin no later than August 2026. This allows time to develop the specification, gain owner approval, place orders for all long-lead items and receive them at the yard before the installation window opens. For vessels with complex or custom-specification requirements, starting in June or July is preferable. The most common refit programme mistake is beginning the specification process too late, then being forced to install whatever is available rather than what was specified.
Are prices for galley equipment higher in 2026 than before the supply disruptions?+
Equipment prices in 2026 are generally higher than pre-2020 levels, reflecting accumulated manufacturer cost increases over the intervening period. The exceptional price increases of 2021-2023 have moderated, and annual price increases have returned to more normal levels. However, ten years represents a meaningful portion of a commercial combi oven's practical service life in a demanding marine environment, and the gap in cooking intelligence between the current iCombi Pro and a ten-year-old Rational model is significant. A ten-year-old Rational that is showing any performance inconsistency — uneven cooking results, temperature calibration issues, increasing service frequency — is a strong candidate for replacement rather than continuing repair. We assess each case on the specific equipment's condition rather than age alone.
Is it worth upgrading to induction cooking in a 2026 refit?+
The case for induction cooking conversion in a refit has never been stronger. The safety benefits — eliminating LPG from the vessel — are significant and increasingly recognised by insurance underwriters. The operational benefits — faster heat response, more precise temperature control, easier cleaning, lower ventilation extraction requirement — are well-established. The electrical supply upgrade required is increasingly manageable as vessel electrical systems have generally become more robust. The primary constraint remains the cost of the electrical upgrade; for vessels where the existing supply capacity is close to adequate, the incremental cost of induction conversion may be modest.
How do we prioritise if we can't do everything in the available window?+
Prioritisation should be based on operational impact and risk: first, replace any equipment that is currently causing operational problems or that presents a reliability risk for the upcoming season. Second, address known compliance gaps — food safety equipment required by the vessel's commercial code. Third, make the improvement that delivers the most operational return for the available budget — often this is cold storage capacity for charter vessels. The most common mistakes we encounter: starting too late (forcing late equipment orders that constrain choice or miss the installation window); under-budgeting based on outdated price information; specifying equipment without confirming that it physically fits the available installation position; not confirming electrical supply capacity before specifying induction cooking; specifying equipment from brands without adequate service networks in the vessel's operating region; and over-focusing on individual equipment pieces while missing the workflow implications of the overall layout. Engaging a specialist at the earliest stage prevents most of these errors.
Can a galley refit be managed remotely without visiting the vessel?+
A limited refit — replacing individual pieces of equipment like-for-like within existing positions — can be managed remotely with detailed photographic documentation and accurate measurements from the captain. A comprehensive refit involving layout changes or significant new equipment requires a physical survey to measure the installation positions accurately and assess the services connections. We have successfully managed remote equipment replacements on vessels we could not physically access, but we recommend a physical survey for any project where incorrect dimensional assumptions would create a significant programme or cost risk.

A complete galley rebuild including joinery, services and structural modifications adds 30 to 50% to the equipment cost in construction and installation.
