Project Overview: Three-Vessel Family Fleet Galley Specification

This project involved the development and implementation of a standardised galley equipment specification across a three-vessel family superyacht fleet — comprising a 62-metre motor yacht (the primary family vessel), a 44-metre charter support vessel and a 28-metre tender/day vessel. The owner family operated all three vessels primarily in the Eastern Mediterranean with occasional transatlantic passages.

The brief was to develop a fleet equipment standard that maximised operational consistency across all three vessels — allowing crew to transfer between vessels without equipment retraining, enabling a shared spare parts inventory and simplifying the after-sales service management for the fleet management company.

Fleet Standard Development

We approached the fleet standard development in three phases:

Phase 1 — Vessel survey: We surveyed all three vessels to establish the existing equipment configuration, identify which items were approaching end of life and assess each vessel's specific galley requirements based on its size and operational role.

Phase 2 — Standard development: Based on the survey findings and discussions with the fleet captain and management company, we developed the fleet standard specification. The standard defined preferred brands and model families for each equipment category, while allowing size variations based on each vessel's specific capacity requirements.

Fleet standard established:

  • Combi ovens — Rational iCombi Pro across all vessels (6-grid on 28m, 10-grid on 44m, twin 10-grid on 62m)
  • Dishwashing — Winterhalter across all vessels (GS glasswasher on 28m; UC-M dishwasher + GS glasswasher on 44m; UC-L + GS-R on 62m)
  • Laundry — Miele Marine across all vessels (WTD combi on 28m; single PW+PT pair on 44m; dual PW+PT pairs on 62m)
  • Refrigeration — Dometic marine-rated across all vessels, supplemented by True Refrigeration commercial undercounter on 44m and 62m

Phase 3 — Procurement and implementation: Equipment was procured for all three vessels simultaneously through the same supplier relationships, securing fleet volume pricing that reduced unit costs by approximately 15% versus individual purchase pricing. Equipment was delivered to two yards and one marina berth according to each vessel's refitting schedule.

Fleet Spare Parts Programme

As part of the fleet project, we developed a shared spare parts inventory held at the fleet's home base in Athens. The inventory was sized to cover common-failure items for all equipment across all three vessels, with particular depth for the Rational combi oven (door gaskets, wash arm nozzles, core temperature probes) and Winterhalter dishwasher (door seals, pump impellers, heating elements). Individual vessel kits were also specified for aboard carriage.

Project Outcome

The fleet standard has been in operation for two seasons. Crew movement between vessels has been seamless from an equipment perspective — a chef moving from the 44-metre to the 62-metre vessel found the galley immediately familiar, with the Rational oven's interface and the Winterhalter dishwasher's operation identical across both vessels. The shared spare parts inventory has been drawn upon three times — twice for Winterhalter door seals and once for a Rational core temperature probe — with parts dispatched from Athens to the vessel's location within 24 hours on each occasion.
